Washing your hair only once a week may be a poor choice, even if it appears clean. The heated debate surrounding how often you should wash your hair might find its resolution here.
While some experts argue that washing your hair once a week is acceptable if you use a high-quality shampoo and your hair reacts positively to this frequency, there's another perspective. If your hair becomes exceedingly dry and is not washed frequently enough, it can lose its natural moisture over time. According to stylist Rosi Fernandez, director of Ananda Ferdi, it is inadvisable to go more than one week without washing your hair, as "follicles become clogged and do not get oxygenated," she explains.
When It Looks Clean, But It's Not
I have always been slightly envious of those who can go several days without washing their hair, as someone who washes mine every day. For instance, the Kardashians' stylist, Jen Atkin, stated in an interview with Allure that she could go four or five days without washing, only resorting to an updo with a sharp center parting on the last day. However, the reality is that even though the hair may seem clean, pollution (a significant aggressor of hair in 2023) can soil it without your awareness. "It may look like the hair is clean, but with pollution, sweat, tobacco smoke… the hair becomes saturated," says Fernandez.
The Consequences of Pollution (and Insufficient Washing)
Fernandez notes that washing hair fewer than twice a week can clog follicles, leading to scalp flaking, itching, sensitivity, dandruff, and even hair loss. These minuscule particles, invisible to the eye, hinder the hair from oxygenating properly. This is why it's advisable to wash it more frequently—even with thick, dry hair that you might not feel requires frequent washing. The effects of pollution on hair were studied as far back as 1994 by the Industrial Toxicology Research Centre in Lucknow. "At that time, it was shown that suspended particles, smoke, and pollutant gases deposited on the hair and scalp, causing inflammatory and irritative reactions that could even result in hair loss," explains Adolfo Remartínez, founder of Nuggela & Sulé.

Washing It Twice a Week
No universal rule governs the frequency of hair washing. As Fernandez points out, factors such as where you live or the lifestyle you lead must be considered. "Living in a city with high pollution is not the same as living in the countryside," she asserts. "The climate, riding a motorcycle or car, playing sports, the quality of the water used for washing, and so on, all play roles." Even with dry and thick hair, experts recommend washing at least twice a week to remove the residues that can build up on the scalp and saturate and weaken the hair. Fernandez also emphasizes the significance of emulsifying shampoo in your hands before application, especially if it's an organic product. "A thorough rinse restores hair's shine," she concludes.
